Defensive Play
Don't deal into their win
Sometimes you can't win. Don't lose instead.
DEALING IN = THE WORST SEAT AT THE TABLE
• You pay double the base — the other two each pay single
• So you carry the largest single share, not the whole hand
• On a limit hand that doubled share is brutal
DEFENSIVE PRIORITIES:
1. Signs an opponent may be in tenpai (one tile from winning):
• 3 or more exposed melds — they need very little to finish
• They've stopped discarding tiles from one suit entirely
• The wall is getting low and they're still discarding calmly
• DISCARD SAFE TILES ONLY once you spot these signs
• Break up your hand if needed
• Living to fight another round > winning this one
2. Safe tiles to discard:
• Honors already discarded (dead tiles)
• Terminals that have all been played
• Tiles from suits they've abandoned
• Your own discards (they didn't want them before)
3. Dangerous tiles:
• Honors they haven't discarded
• Tiles in suits they're collecting
• 5s, 6s, 7s (middle tiles everyone wants)
When in doubt: discard what they discarded.
